Reality as subordinate to Scripture

“… because Scripture participates in the rationalistic project, objective evidence, as the true representation of reality, must be understood to support the biblical claims no matter their ostensible appearance. If the evidence appears to support another position other than the literal interpretation of Genesis then, by definition, the facts ‘are misunderstood’ or being intentionally manipulated.” (The Academic Nut)

  1. Yep, that pretty well describes my worldview for 40 years.

It is very hard to "undo" such thinking.

  2. If reality is subordinated to a writing, how will one ever rationally test the writing? To the staunch Muslim reality is subordinate to the Koran. The end result, there's no way you will ever be able to reach them with the gospel, because if it contradicts the Koran they don't believe it as reality. This kind of thinking is dangerous, and is more likely to be found among Calvinists (the most 'Islamic' of all sects in 'Christendom') than anywhere else in 'Christendom'.

  3. For Christians to consent to study Scripture on the assumption that it is a fallible human book would not argue intellectual honesty so much as uncritical muddle-headedness; and if they are consistent they will decline to do it.
    J.I. Packer

"Reason must be deluded, blinded, and destroyed. Faith must trample underfoot all reason, sense, and understanding, and whatever it sees must be put out of sight and…know nothing but the word of God.
    Martin Luther

If we are perplexed by any apparent contradiction in Scripture, it is not allowable to say, the author of this book is mistaken; but either the manuscript is faulty, or the translation is wrong, or you have not understood.
    Augustine
