Mark’s Christology

Nick Norelli and Vinny are debating whether the author of Mark thought of Jesus as a divine figure (Christology). Both give good arguments for their positions and I am ill-equipped to judge which one is right.

Interestingly, if Nick is correct, that Mark’s Christology is advance like John’s, wouldn’t that undermine the historical reliability of Mark?

  1. I agree... if Mark did see Jesus as divine, then it would suggest that Mark was written nearer the time of John, which has been accepted as the latest gospel. Although, I did read recently that some scholars are discussing findings that would suggest that John is not as late as we thought, and that it may actually have been written much nearer to the others than we once thought.

  2. That's one. Another thing is that if Mark is more theological that we had assumed, then there is the possibility that the stories in Mark are slanted towards a certain theological view. Aside from the late dating, most critical scholars do not use John as much as the synoptics for its high view of Christology.

  3. Hey TBC, if you or any of your readers have time, could you:

(1)give an atheist summary of the main Christologies with a few bullets on Arguments & Counter Arguments.

(2)list the Bible sites you follow and categorize them by their type of Christianity.

These would be incredibly useful and appreciated !
